xTyFTP is an efficient, secure and easy-to-use FTP program. You don’t have to be a computer expert to use it. To protect data transmission, simply check the Encrypt option before uploading starts. No installation or setup is needed. No secure connection such as SSL is needed.

- Easy to use. xTyFTP is integrated with the Windows Explorer. You can access files and folders as if you were using the Windows Explorer.
Step 1. Start up
Start the xTyFTP program, and you will see the following screen.
The box on the left represents your local computer, and the one on the right represents the remote FTP server. Before it is connected, the right box is blank.
Click the Connect button to connect to your FTP server account.
Step 2. Login
On the following Login screen, in the Profile field, enter a name that you would like to call this connection.
Fill in the FTP address, Login and Password. The person who created your FTP account or asked you to connect should give you this information.
Unless you are told differently, you can leave the other fields as shown and click the Connect button.
This will connect to your FTP account on the remote FTP server.
Step 3. Download Files
You are now connected to your account on the FTP server.
To download files from the FTP server to your computer, highlight the files and folders that you want to download and click the left pointing arrow.
To download files and folders to a different folder on your computer, use the buttons above the left box to change the folder.
To download files and folders from a different folder on the FTP server, use the buttons above the right box to change the folder.
Step 4. Upload Files
Files and folders have been downloaded to your computer as seen in the left box.
To upload files from your computer to the FTP server, highlight the files and folders in the left box that you want to upload and click the right pointing arrow.
To upload files and folders from a different folder on your computer, use the buttons above the left box to change the folder.
To upload files and folders to a different folder on the FTP server, use the buttons above the right box to change the folder.
Step 5. Encrypt Files
If you want your files to be encrypted before uploaded to the FTP server, before uploading (Step 4), check the Encrypt box in the screen center. You will be prompted to choose an Encryption Key.
An encryption key is just like a password. The encryption process mixes it with the file content to make the file unreadable by others.
Each encryption key has a Key Name. The key name is not used in encryption, but it can give your a hint when you decrypt the files.
TIPS: As you do with choosing a password, pick a strong key, and a name that is easy to remember but not related to the key itself.
Step 6. Decrypt Files
If the files you want to download are encrypted, you need to have the correct key to decrypt the files. Otherwise the files downloaded will not be readable.
Before downloading (Step 3), check the Decrypt box in the screen center. You will be prompted to enter the Decryption Key.
If the files you want to download are sent to you by someone else, he/she should tell you the decryption key in advance.
Step 7. Manage Files and Folders.
To delete files or folders, rename files or folders on the FTP server, highlight the files and folders on the right boc, then right click on the selection and select the option.
To create new folder, right click blank area and select New Folder.
HINT: To delete a folder, you must go into the folder and delete the content first.
Step 7. Disconnect
Before disconnecting, you may want to check whether all files have been successfully transferred. To do so, click the L (Log) button lower in the middle. Details of the transferring are recorded in the log as shown below.
Once you have finished uploading aor downloading files, disconnect from the FTP server by clicking the Disconnect button up in the middle, and exit xTyFTP.
Step 0. What is this?
In many cases, you need to regularly (e.g. every hour) transfer files between the same folders, in your computer and on the remote server.
With this feature of xTyFTP, you can simply create a task and schedule it to run at the desired times. Once it is created, files will be transferred as you specfied. You don’t need to keep xtyFTP running. You can even log off your computer. At the preset times, the computer will run the task and transfer the files.
For example, if you are a transcriptionist, you may want to create a task to upload transcripts modified within last 24 hours and download voice files created within last 12 hours…
Step 1. Make a Connection
Start the xTyFTP program. Create a connection.
Test the connection and maker sure you can upload and download files with the connection.When ready, click the Schedule button to bring up the xTyFTP Task Manager.
Step 2. xTyFTP Task Manager
An xTyFTP Task consists of information such as: how to connect, which files to transfer at what time, etc..
xTyFTP Task Manager is used to manage all the tasks you have created.
The box on the left lists the names of all your tasks. The right side of the screen is used to edit the task details of the task you selected on the left box.
To create a new task, click the New Task button on the top.
Step 3. Set a Connection
On the Select a Connection screen, you will set a connection for the new task.
Use the Profile dropdown box to select a connection. The connection you created earlier should be in this list.
There are some other buttons on this screen. You can leave them alone unless you know what they do.
When ready, click OK to continue.
Step 4. Task Settings
On this screen, you will tell what files to transfer and how they are to be transferred.
- You can change the task name.
- Set upload information if you want the task to upload files.
- Set download information if you want the task to download files.
- Click Save Change to save the task settings.
There many other options to fine tune the task.
Step 5. Fine-tune the TaskOn the xTyFTP Task Manager screen, you can:
- Change the connection of a task with Connection Setting.
- Set up email notification with E-mail Notification.
- Find a lot more options with More Task Options as shown below.
For example, if the option After files are downloaded successfully downloaded: Delete remote files is set, the files will be deleted as desired when the task is run.
When you are done with task configuration, don’t forget to save the changes.
Step 6. Schedule the Task
By scheduling the task to run at specified times, you don’t have to leave xTyFTP running, and you can log off your account. The files will be transferred in the background automatically.
To schedule a task, on the xTyFTP Task Manager screen, you first select the task on the task list box, and click the Schedule on the lower right.
Step 7. Manage Tasks
The new task has now been created and scheduled to run as shown below. At this moment, you might want to review the task by selecting a task on the left and clicking the Settings.
On this xTyFTP Task Manager screen, you can actually run a task right away by selecting the task on the left and clicking the Run It Now button.
After a task is run, you can check the result by clicking Task Log. It records the log of the most recent task run.
To delete an unwanted task, you select it on the left and click the Delete Task button.
One-Click File Transfer
Step 0. What is this?
In many cases, you always transfer files between the same folders, in your computer and on the remote server.
With this feature of xTyFTP, you can simply create a task and a shortcut to the task on your desktop. Once it is created, just double click the shortcut, and the files will be transferred as desired. You don’t need to run the xTyFTP program to transfer the files.
For example, if you are a transcriptionist, you can want to create a task to upload transcripts modified within last 24 hours and download voice files created within last 12 hours.
Step 1. Create a Task
In order to configure One-click File Transfer, create a task. This specifies how files should be transferred.
Once the task is created, it should appear in the xTyFTP Task Manager screen as hsown below. Select the task on the left and click Create Shortcut button.
TIPS: Don’t forget to use Save Changes to save your changes when you edit a task.
Step 2. Create the Task Link
On the following screen, enter a name for the task link, and check where you want the link to be placed. Click the OK button to create the task link.
Once the link is created, whenever you double click it, the task will start to run, and the files will be transferred automatically.
Grant Account Access
Step 0. What is this?
This feature of xTyFTP allows you to grant limited access of your FTP account to other users without revealing your account information.
- You can designate a folder for the access. The user will not be able to see other folders.
- You can enable or disable the use of encryption.
- You can also specify an encryption that the user must use to encrypt or decrpyt files.
- You can also terminate the access easily.
For example, you hire a transcriptionist under contract, and you need to exchange files with him during the contract. So you would use this feature to give him partial access to your account. When the contract is over, you terminate the access.
Step 1. Select a Profile
Click the Connect button to bring up the Login screen.
On the login screen, select a connection profile you want to use.
When ready, click the Lock button. This will take you to the Lock Options screen.
Step 2. Edit the Profile
On the Lock Options screen below, check This profile can only access the following remote folder. and select the desired remote folder.
If you do not want the profile to encrypt file, check No encryption allowed. Otherwise check Encryption allowed.
If you want to specify an encryption key that the profile must use, check This profile must use the following key to encrypt files..
When done, click the Continue button.
Step 3. Lock the Profile
Enter a Locking Password and click OK to lock the profile.
The screenshot below shows the profile after it is locked.
Click Export to continue.
Step 4. Export the Profile
The locked profile is packed as shown below. Copy all the text inside the box and paste it into your email. Send it to the person whom you want to give the access.
Click Close when you are done.
Step 5. Import the Profile (on client side)
When the person receives the connection profile from you, he/she needs to Import the Profile in order to use it.
He or she will run xTyFTP and click the Connect button on the main screen to get to the Login screen.
On the Login screen, leave everything as it is and click the Import button.
Step 6. Paste the Profile (on client side)
On the Import Profile screen, copy the profile received and paste it into the box as shown below. The profile text starts with <PROFILE> and ends with </PROFILE>.
Click Import to finish importing the profile.
Step 7. Profile Imported (on client side)
The following screen shows the profile that has been imported.
Click Connect to connect.
Step 8. Access Limited (on client side)
The following screen shows the connection using the imprted profile.
With the locked profile, the user’s access is limited to the designated folder only. He/she will not be able to view or change the other folders.
TIP: To revoke the granted access, simply connect to your account, then rename or delete the designated folder.
